Before the unification of the Tibetan plateau, Kam and Rlang were ministers of 'Bal lJi rmang ru ti in Sum yul (ms. PT 1286 l. 21).
In the Old Tibetan Annals "Kam" is used both as a family name for a Tibetan official and as a transcription of a Chinese family name (see Kam Khri bzang and the chinese envoy Kam Keng, ms. PT 1288-ITJ 750 l. 25-26, 143 ).
Kam is a Sum pa clan name according to Tsuguhito Takeuchi (Takeuchi 1995 p. 132)
