*A character with a name similar to "sTag sTong zigs" is found in mKhas pa lde'u's chronicle :
gNyer sTag bcan sTong gzigs. He is said to have erected the Gling khri rtse'i gtsug la khang in order to purify the sin of leading a war against China ("de yang gnyer stag bcan stong gzigs kyis rgya la dmag drangs pa'i sdig sbyong du / gling khri rtse'i gtsug lag khang bzhengs" mKhas pa lde'u 149na 2010 ed. p. 250).

The same character is also mentioned (with spelling variations) in other historical works :

- In dBa' bzhed, sNyer stag btsan ldong gzigs is on the buddhist side at the time of the debate between buddhism and bon (dBa' bzhed 2010 ed. p. 27-28, also gNyer rTag btsan ldong gzigs in sBa bzhed 2010 ed. p. 99)

- in Ne'u Pandita chronicle, he is the first of the list of mdzang pa mi bdun : "gcig du 'dzangs pa gnyer stag tshal ldong gzigs yin / de yis las stabs ci byas na / ba re glang re gnag re ra lug khrims su btsan <bcas/> rtsva la chung bu byas nas dbyar rtsi dgun du 'tshal / spang thang zhung du glog <slog> nas de mthar khang khyim brtsigs / de'i gong na bod la rtsi thog lo thog med / (p. 10)"
he is also credited for erecting the rGya'i ha zhang lha khang in order to expiate the sins comitted during his campaign against Zhang po rgya (i.e. China) "gnyer stag btsan ldong gzigs kyis zhang po rgya la dmag 'dren pa'i dmag dpon byas pa'i sdig bshags su rgya'i ha shang lha khang bzhengs",  (bKa' thang sde lnga 1997 ed. p. 489-491).

- In bKa' thangs sde lgna : "/ gnyer pa stag mtshan ldong gzig blon po khyod / / rgyal po klu yi khyab 'jug skye ba blangs / / / tshe 'phos da lta rgyal po'i blon po yin /" (Blon po bka' thang XXVI, in bKa' thang sde lnga 1997 ed. p. 507)  and  "/ blon gnyer stag mtshan gdong gzigs 'di / / la stod 'am zhes su / / nam mkha'i ming can la stod kha lo sgyur /" (Blon po bka' thang XXVIII, in bKa' thang sde lnga 1997 ed. p. 515-517)

gNyer does not seem to occur in Old Tibetan sources as a family or clan name. However, gnyer pa appears to be a title, translated as "levy official" by T. Takeuchi  (see Takeuchi 1995 text 33 p. 88, 257, and text 34 p. 260, "It seems that gnyer-pa were officials whose task was to levy or collect taxes, tributes, penalties etc" Takeuchi 1995 p. 259).

I was also so far unable to find in Old Tibetan documentation the spelling lDong gzig[s], although it seems to  be prevalent in later litterature.
